Explanation of Adult Leader Training Scheme in Scouting Ireland

Courses are run in various locations to meet the training needs of the adults in Scouting. A calendar of dates in each province is published a couple of times each year and is available here                                                                   

  • Welcome to Scouting

Welcome to Scouting Training is the first step in formal leader training a leader encounters as they join a Scout Group. It is delivered by the Group Leader or Group Trainer, normally on a one to one basis, and the new leader receives a Welcome to Scouting Pack. This pack includes the Welcome to Scouting Booklet, The Code of Good Practice and the Leader Application Form SIF 1, Reference Forms SIF 1a and the Garda Vetting Forms the completion each is explained by the mentor. It also contains a Leader Training Record Card.  Welcomed to Scouting training is often referred to as “WTS”

  • Child Protection Awareness Training

Child Protection Awareness Training is a four hour compulsory module for all leaders in Scouting Ireland. It is co-ordinated and booked at county Level and is delivered by a core of specially trained trainers. The module covers all aspects of Scouting Irelands Code of Good Practice and associated policies on this matter.  It is designed to be completed by the adult within the first few weeks of joining Scouting.

  • Scouting Fundamentals

The Scouting Fundamentals Course is a one day course co-ordinated and booked through the Provincial Office. The course covers the fundamental elements of Scouting such as Aims & Objectives of Scouting Ireland, Law and Promise, The Scout Method amongst other topics. This is designed to be completed by the adult within the first few months of joining scouting.

  • Section Essentials

The Section Essentials course is specific to the Programme Section that you are involved with e.g. Beavers Cubs Scouts etc. The one day course co-ordinated and booked through the Provincial Office. The Section Essentials Course will give you a thorough understanding of the programme and activities of that section an understanding of the Progressive Badge Scheme and the skills required to plan and implement a quality scout programme relevant to the section. This is designed to be completed by the adult within the first few months of joining scouting.

  • Scouting Skills

Scouting Skills is provided in a number of different formats at county level. The will vary from evening workshops to day long events and weekend events. Scouting skills is designed to give a leader a variety of scouting and outdoor skills to enhance the programme they deliver to the young people in their section. These skills can be gained over a period of time.

  • Sectional Overnights

The Sectional Overnights course is specific to the Programme Section that you are involved with e.g. Beavers Cubs Scouts etc The one day course is co-ordinated and booked through the Provincial Office. The course is designed to give a leader the skills necessary to take young people away overnight.

  • Leadership Course

The Leadership Course is the final formal course in the woodbadge scheme. It is a residential weekend course and deals with Leadership, Styles of Leadership, Teamwork and Team Building; It is primarily a self development course to help you to develop as a leader. To attend the Leadership Training course a leader must have completed all other training modules above. A leader on a Leadership Course will choose a project and on the successful completion and assessment of this project the woodbadge will be awarded,

  • Group Leader Training

Group Leader Training is a Management Course for Group Leaders it consists of four compulsory modules and several optional modules of which two must be completed. The Course can be delivered in various formats either modular or over a weekend. The Compulsory modules are (a) Against the Odds (b) Management Quality (c) Managing the People (d). The optional modules can be drawn from (i) Public Relations, (ii) Risk Management, (iii) Managing the Money,  (iv) Taking the Group Abroad, (v) Recruiting Leaders amongst others.
