Venture Scouts : Scouts Of The World Award

The Award pilot
Scouting Ireland is carrying out a pilot of the Scouts of the World award scheme with 21 young people. This shows Scouting Ireland as one of the world leaders in Scouting terms in promoting peace, development and environmental awareness. This is a special award showing that a young person is aware of world issues and has acquired through a voluntary service the necessary experience and skills to become a citizen of the world.
Scouting Ireland and the Scouts of the World programme - a report
The pilot SW Dicovery programme
Who is this for?
Venture Scouts and young Scouters over the age of 17 and under 25 .
The nature of this project requires that participants be:
* Comfortable dealing with mature subjects
* Comfortable with potential travel overseas, with experience of independent travel/Explorer Belt etc being an advantage
* Willing to work with individuals they would not normally associate with or may even intentionally avoid
* Physically capable of dealing with a variety of environments
* Aware that they may encounter disturbing situations
* But most of all, interested in making the world a better place
How it works
The Scouts of the World Discovery, a 4 day residential experience which focuses on development, peace and environmental sustainability
The Scouts of the World Voluntary Service, a service project of more than 2 weeks duration
Previous projects
Previous SW Voluntary Services have included:
- Water conservation projects in Taipei,
- Educational projects with the Aboriginal community in Australia,
- Assistance to the Red Cross in the Solomon Islands,
- Projects which aid polio eradication in Angola,
- Projects which have engaged with the Roma community in Slovakia,
- Working with street children in Kenya,
- Engagement with refugees in Rwanda,
- Raising awareness of the plight of child workers in Egypt
How to get involved?
Individual groups will be facilitated, depending on the results of the pilot, when we have gotten our SW infrastructure up and running (SW bases, taskforce and network).
