Lough Dan Scout Centre

Lough Dan Scout Centre is situated in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains National Park on the shores of Lough Dan, but only 30km from Dublin city. It is wild yet accessible and perfect for those who want the fun, challenge and adventure of the great outdoors.

The centre is run by a team of volunteer staff and patrol (small group) activities are the norm. As a scout centre our mission is to educate and to facilitate the planning and running of your own programme of outdoor activities - activities that will provide learning opportunities and help your members to build confidence and develop life skills such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility, creativity and problem solving, self-reliance, respect for others and for the environment.

Lough Dan Scout Centre is an ideal base camp for all that the Wicklow Mountains have to offer. The site is suited for all types of camping and camp craft with ample camping fields as well as secluded areas. On-site facilities include toilets and showers, altar fires, fire wood, an outdoor kitchen and a wet weather shelter.

The main hostel has 30 beds with kitchen facilities, common room, patio, toilets & showers. A smaller upstairs hostel used in conjunction with the ground floor can be booked separately - when combined with camp cooking it is a facility popular for those doing lightweight expeditions.

Available on site are orienteering, archery, pioneering, crate climbing, team building games, rafting, campfire circle and an assault course.

The lake can be used for canoeing, rafting, swimming and all sorts of water activities.

Because of the wonderful amenity value of the Wicklow Mountains and the National Park the local area boasts a whole array of activities.

The centre is a gateway to all that the area and the National Park have to offer. Right outside the gate are endless opportunities for all grades of hill walking and back packing.  Also popular is mountain-top bivvying, light weight expeditions, rock climbing and bouldering, night navigation, mountain running and mountain skills. We're located on the Wicklow Way which is Ireland's first way-marked trail linking Dublin to Glendalough and beyond.

Because of the wonderful amenity value of the Wicklow Mountains & National Park the local area boasts a whole array of activities such as the historic monastic city of Glendalough; the famous Spink walk above the nearby lakes; Saint Kevin's Way and numerous other looped way-marked trails. The state forest service - Coillte - has developed a fantastic mountain bike track at Ballinastoe just 4km from Lough Dan.

Tree Planting

At Lough Dan we are planting a native woodland on 16 acres of hillside. From the relic species on the site such as blue bells, wood sorrel and holly we can assume that this area was woodland before it was cleared for rough grazing in days gone by. It will form part of a network of native woodlands between Lough Dan and Glendalough creating a fantastic linear wildlife habitat.

On the first weekend of March  as part of National Tree Week Lough Dan Scout Centre invites all scout groups to take part in a tree planting.  It is all part of our Eco-Strategy as we leave a legacy by managing the centre as an Eco-Park where wildlife is protected and everyone is encouraged to reconnect with nature.

Oak, Birch,Hazel & Rowan are planted along with some Alder in the wetland adjacent to the Avonmore River. Fox, badger, red squirrel, deer and numerous bird species inhabit the woodland area.

Sponsor a tree for just €5 and we will have it ready and waiting for you at Lough Dan on the day. We feel this cost is attainable by even our youngest members and we will also provide a stake and a tree tube to protect it from the deer.
Then just come along and plant it. Just bring a spade, a lunch pack and your rain gear and why not go on a hike or have a barbeque while you are at it.
