On Sunday 16th November, 3 Rock County welcomed scouts from across Dublin Province for a fantastic Science Day at Larch Hill. This year, the event was open to all units in the province, and we were thrilled to host over 300 youth members alongside their Scouters. Groups came from 71/62/90 Kilmacud, 137th Balally, 10th Kilternan, 20th Dundrum, 47th Ballybrack, 1st Fairview, and 59th Johnstown, making it a truly provincial gathering.

The day was packed with hands-on science experiments that had everyone exploring, learning, and having fun. Participants got their hands messy with Oobleck, launched film canister rockets, explored fire lighting with chemicals, and even tried their hand at tattooing bananas. From chromatography to static electricity, water rockets to real model rockets, there was no shortage of ways to experiment and discover.

Exciting demonstrations added extra wow-factor, including air pressure tricks, hydrogen and Lycopodium explosions, the classic Elephant’s Toothpaste, and even alkali metals reacting with water. Youth members also explored lasers and optics, flame tests, friction strength, acids and bases, dry ice, lava lamps, and electromagnetic fields. And of course, popcorn was on the go all day to fuel all the scientific excitement!
The day was a brilliant success, inspiring curiosity, teamwork, and a love of science among all the participants. A huge thanks to all the leaders, volunteers, and facilitators who made the day possible and ensured it ran smoothly from start to finish.
