Scouting Ireland is proud to recognise the outstanding actions of four young members of 5th Port Dollymount Sea Scouts, who assisted in the rescue of a swimmer in difficulty at Dollymount Beach on Sunday afternoon.
While participating in a training course on Bull Island, the scouts were alerted to an emergency involving a person trapped under the wooden bridge and at risk of being swept out by the tide. Drawing on their training, teamwork and calm decision-making, the young people quickly relaunched a skiff and made their way to the scene.
Working together, Aoibheann, Laura, Oisín and Gavin safely brought the swimmer to shore before emergency services arrived. Their actions were supported by fellow scouts and Scouters on the course, who helped launch the rescue boat, and by members of the public who raised the alarm.
This incident is a powerful example of the skills and confidence young people develop through Scouting Ireland's SAILS Framework. Through adventures on the water, Sea Scouts build seamanship, leadership and decision-making skills that they carry with them throughout life, preparing them to respond responsibly and effectively when faced with challenging situations.
Credit to the scouts and their volunteer Scouters for putting that training into practice when it really mattered. Their actions exemplify the Scout Motto, "Be Prepared," and reflect the values of courage, service and community that are at the heart of Scouting.
We are immensely proud of the scouts involved and of all the young people and volunteers of 5th Port Dollymount Sea Scouts, whose dedication to training, leadership and youth development helped ensure a safe outcome on the day.
Congratulations to everyone involved!
