Scouts from across the County gathered in the Mansion House to celebrate courage, leadership, and community spirit.
On Thursday, 23rd October 2025, the Dublin Scout Province presented its inaugural Youth Awards Ceremony. Hosted at the Mansion House by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam, the evening marked a milestone celebration of young people across the capital who have demonstrated extraordinary courage, leadership, and service within their communities and the Scout movement.
Praising the awardees and Scouting across Dublin, the Lord Mayor said: “Whether you are nominated for an award or are the recipient of a certificate, a trophy, or a gallantry award, know that you are part of something much bigger. You are helping to build a stronger, kinder, more resilient Dublin. Scouting is more than tents and campfires – it is a way of life rooted in values that we all admire: service, leadership, friendship, and respect.”
The ceremony recognised 32 Young People who embody all that is great in Scouting. In particular, the exceptional achievements of five outstanding Scouts from across the Dublin Scout Province:
- Chloe McGuigan, a Cub Scout, was awarded the Spirit of Scouting Award, recognising the exceptional bravery and presence of mind after witnessing a serious accident. Drawing on first aid skills learned through Scouting, she comforted the injured person, provided crucial information to emergency services, and supported the victim’s young child.
- A Venture Scout, Ella Walshe, was honoured as Peer Mentor of the Year for her quiet leadership, consistent support of younger members, and ability to encourage others through empathy and teamwork. Her humility and positive example make her an outstanding role model within her group.
- Shane Young, a Rover Scout, received the Community Ambassador of the Year award for his ongoing commitment to service both locally and internationally. Through volunteer work in global projects and community outreach, he has inspired others to engage in acts of compassion and global citizenship.
- Cub Scout Cathal Hegarty was presented with the Provincial Commissioner’s Award for his creativity and community engagement through local broadcasting. By producing and hosting a community podcast, he has helped foster local dialogue and inclusion while promoting civic pride and awareness.
- Finally, Luke Barrett, a Venture Scout, earned the Bronze Honour Award for his quick thinking and composure during a mountain expedition. His effective first aid response to an injured peer, combined with his ongoing involvement in local volunteer initiatives, highlighted his leadership, calm under pressure, and community spirit.
Kiernan Gildea, Chairperson of the Dublin Scout Province, said: “The nominees and winners in this year’s Youth Awards highlight the extraordinary character and contribution of young people within the Scouting community. Each award reflects a deep commitment to the Scout Promise, ‘to help other people at all times’, and showcases how these values translate into real-world impact.
Concluding his remarks at the event, the Lord Mayor recognised the dedication of Scout Leaders, volunteers, and families: “You are helping to shape young citizens who are not only confident and capable, but compassionate and thoughtful. You are building the kind of Dublin we can all be proud of.”
