After ten days of intense heat, long days on foot, and unforgettable moments, the 2025 edition of Scouting Ireland’s Explorer Belt has officially come to a close.
Participants landed in Hungary on June 28th, excited and nervous for the challenge ahead. They were dropped in unknown rural locations and had ten days to make their way back to basecamp on foot, covering at least 200 km. With only their maps, a tight budget, and their teammates, they quickly had to swap comfort for problem-solving and adaptability.

Temperatures hit 30°C on day one, and things only got hotter as a European heatwave rolled in. Teams started walking early in the mornings to beat the heat, chasing shade wherever they could. Despite the conditions, spirits stayed high. Some teams crossed into Slovakia by day two, making strong progress.
Blisters were named, riverside naps became a strategy, and sun hats turned into a daily essential. Alongside the physical challenge, teams also worked on cultural projects and engaged with local communities. By the halfway point, they had found their rhythm and were sharing five-word reflections from the trail - a mix of struggle, laughs, and great stories.

As the finish line came into view, tired legs kept moving and determination stayed strong. Some clouds finally brought relief from the sun just in time for the final stretch. Teams arrived back to basecamp proud, exhausted, and ready for a proper shower, or at least a rain rinse.

The days that followed at basecamp were filled with celebration and fun: waterparks, canoeing on the Little Danube, cooking nights, games, music, and plenty of rest. Assessment teams were on hand to evaluate each team’s journey, not just by distance but by the skills, teamwork, and attitude they showed.
On July 10th, the successful participants were officially named as this year’s Explorer Belt ‘Belters’.

The event ended with huge pride in everyone involved. Event Lead Ruairí, the assessment team, sweep crew, and support staff are all thanked for making the expedition possible. Well done to all participants and Scouters who made this amazing adventure happen!
