Cost: €120 per Scouter (includes accommodation for two nights, all meals, and hill skills education)
Event Overview
The National Mountain Moot weekend offers a blend of:
- Training & skills development workshops
- Skills masterclasses
- Traditional hiking
- Great camaraderie
This event is open to any adult member of Scouting Ireland, regardless of skill level. We believe “hill walking is for everybody”.
Participation Details
- Minimum participation target: 25 groups
- Maximum participants per group: 3
- Overall maximum attendees: 60 (to maintain a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio)
- 15 experienced instructors will facilitate personalised training
Logistics
- Price: €120 (covers accommodation, meals, workshops)
- Programme runs from Friday evening (~9 pm) to Sunday afternoon (~2 pm)
- Social events included each night

- Payment must be made at the time of booking
- Booking closes once the event is full — don’t delay!
Training Levels
This is a training weekend — no assessments will take place.
Training is available at four levels:
- Beginner
- Experienced Beginner
- Intermediate
- Advanced
All participants should be able to walk a minimum of 6 km over broken ground with a daypack. Note: Walking will include some night navigation and potentially challenging weather conditions.
Training Level Descriptions:
Beginner
- Little experience on upland or rough terrain
- Uncomfortable using map/compass
- Unsure what to wear or bring on a day walk in bad weather
- Want to gain confidence leading Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts outdoors
Experienced Beginner
- Walked on forest trails, small hills, boggy ground
- Sometimes uncertain of location but others in group navigate
- Has correct clothing but needs more gear
- Comfortable in rain, eager to try night walking
- Want to learn to care for youth in familiar outdoor terrain
Intermediate
- Experience on summits of hills and Irish mountains
- Can navigate with map and compass
- Fully equipped for bad weather
- Some experience with night navigation, looking to improve
- Comfortable leading youth on forest trails and small hills, wants to handle bigger hills
Advanced
- Confident navigating in dark/high Irish mountain areas, though occasional errors
- Rarely gets wet on hikes
- Comfortable day or night with peers
- Wants to improve group management at night in mountains
- Interested in advanced patrol leadership over long distances in tough conditions
