For over 40 years, leaders of the 35th Dublin Scout Group, based in Donore Avenue, have upheld a proud Christmas tradition by carol singing to raise funds for the local St Vincent de Paul (SVP) conferences in the parish.
Each year, during the week before Christmas, scout leaders would gather in the scout den to plan a route around local pubs along the South Circular Road and Harold’s Cross. Visiting approximately 12 pubs in one evening, they would sing a selection of carols and collect donations from customers. This long-standing effort typically raised between €1,100 and €1,200 annually for SVP.
Three years ago, the group decided to expand the initiative by involving younger scout members. With the necessary permit secured, the scouts took to Grafton Street on the weekend before Christmas. The move proved a great success and has since become a highlight of the group’s festive activities. This year, leaders and younger members together raised an additional €1,800 through their city-centre carol singing.
In total, €3,000 has been donated to the St Vincent de Paul conferences, funds which will be used to support individuals and families in need within the Donore Avenue area.

Founded in 1928, the 35th Dublin Scout Group is approaching its centenary year. Supporting the local community remains a central part of the scout programme, and members see this annual fundraiser as a meaningful way to give back. As the scouts themselves recognise, Christmas is a time for giving as well as receiving.
